Authority service · Wooden furniture sourcing

India's wooden-furniture manufacturing cluster is anchored on four commercially significant species — sheesham (Indian rosewood), mango wood, acacia and teak — each with distinct grain, hardness, moisture behaviour and finish characteristics. Asia Sourcing sources wooden furniture across all four species from cluster-appropriate factories, with FSC Chain-of-Custody, kiln-drying moisture verification (8-12%) and pre-shipment AQL 2.5 inspection as standard.

Wood species used in Indian furniture

Sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo) — the workhorse species of Indian solid-wood furniture, particularly Jodhpur. Rich brown grain with contrasting dark streaks, Janka hardness ~1,660 lbf, dimensionally stable when kiln-dried to 8-12% moisture. Standard for dining, bedroom and casegoods at premium retail tier. FSC-certified sheesham is now cluster-standard.

Mango wood (Mangifera indica) — an under-utilised hardwood by-product of India's mango orchards, Janka hardness ~1,070 lbf, lighter and more porous than sheesham with a distinctive spalted grain pattern in older heartwood. Excellent for occasional furniture, sideboards, TV units and rustic-style dining. FSC-adjacent (plantation-recovery) sustainability story is strong.

Acacia (Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis) — plantation-grown, Janka hardness ~2,300 lbf (harder than teak), warm honey-brown grain. Excellent for outdoor garden furniture, hospitality outdoor and premium dining. FSC-certified plantation acacia is cluster-standard.

Teak (Tectona grandis) — Nagpur and Ernakulam clusters, Janka hardness ~1,155 lbf, natural silica content and high oil content for outstanding weather resistance. Premium tier, used for garden, hospitality outdoor and marine-grade furniture. Plantation-grown Indian teak is FSC-available; wild teak is restricted and Asia Sourcing sources only plantation-origin.

Hospitality — hotel-guestroom casegoods, restaurant tables and chairs, lobby lounge consoles, corridor casegoods.

Moisture and dimensional stability discipline

Solid-wood furniture failure in destination markets is overwhelmingly caused by moisture-content mismanagement at the manufacturing stage. Cluster-standard practice is kiln-drying to 8-12% moisture — the equilibrium moisture content for temperate indoor climates. Our pre-production inspection includes moisture-meter verification on random-sampled boards from the production batch, with a hold-and-remediate protocol if moisture reads above 14%.

For destinations with heated indoor climates (Nordic winter, Canadian winter, US Midwest with forced-air heating) we specify 6-8% moisture. For humid destinations (US Gulf Coast, Southeast Asia, Middle East coastal) we specify 10-12%. Getting the moisture spec right at the factory is what prevents cupping, checking, and drawer-runner binding in the buyer's warehouse three months after arrival.

Certifications for wooden furniture from India

FSC Chain-of-Custody — cluster-standard for sheesham, mango, plantation-acacia and plantation-teak. Every Asia Sourcing wooden-furniture engagement verifies FSC certificate against the FSC public database (info.fsc.org) at factory audit stage. PEFC — available where required, less common in India than FSC. GS-mark and DIN EN 1728 durability testing — Germany compliance, TÜV or SGS lab-tested per SKU family. BS 5852 fire retardance — UK compliance for upholstered wooden furniture. UKCA and CE — where structurally required. CARB Phase 2 formaldehyde — engineered-wood casegoods bound for US destination.

Wooden Furniture Sourcing India · Frequently asked questions

Where is wooden furniture manufactured in India?

Four main clusters. Jodhpur (Rajasthan) — India's largest solid-wood cluster, primarily sheesham, mango-wood and acacia. Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) — carved and upholstered wood. Jaipur (Rajasthan) — specialty craft and hand-painted. Nagpur (Maharashtra) — teak specialty. Ernakulam (Kerala) — tropical hardwood and marine-grade teak.

What is the difference between sheesham and mango wood?

Sheesham (Dalbergia sissoo) is denser (Janka ~1,660 lbf), dimensionally more stable, with a rich dark-brown grain and contrasting streaks. Mango wood (Mangifera indica) is lighter (Janka ~1,070 lbf), more porous, with a distinctive lighter honey grain and often spalted patterns in older heartwood. Sheesham is premium-tier; mango wood is a value-tier alternative with a strong sustainability story.

Is Indian wooden furniture FSC-certified?

Cluster-standard is FSC Chain-of-Custody on sheesham, plantation-acacia, plantation-teak and mango wood. Asia Sourcing verifies FSC certificates against the FSC public database at factory audit and requires FSC-labelled invoicing on all buyer POs where FSC has been specified.

What moisture content should Indian wooden furniture be at?

8-12% for temperate indoor destinations (UK, Germany, France, Northern US). 6-8% for heated indoor destinations (Nordics, Canadian winter, US Midwest). 10-12% for humid coastal destinations (US Gulf, Southeast Asia, Middle East coastal). Our pre-production inspection verifies moisture on random-sampled boards.

What is the MOQ for wooden furniture sourcing from India?

Sheesham dining and bedroom at Jodhpur: 200-2,000 units per SKU. Mango-wood occasional at Jodhpur: 100-1,000 units per SKU. Jaipur specialty craft: 50-500 units per SKU. Teak at Nagpur or Ernakulam: 100-500 units per SKU depending on species and specification.
