What an India sourcing agent actually does
An India sourcing agent is your permanent in-country representative — a single accountable team that owns supplier identification, factory audit, sample development, price negotiation, quality control, container loading supervision and export documentation on your behalf. Unlike a broker or a directory service, an independent India sourcing agent operates on the buyer's side of the transaction: your risks are our risks, your quality standard is our reporting standard, and our fee is on your invoice — not hidden inside the factory's FOB.
Every Asia Sourcing engagement begins with a written buyer brief covering target retails, MOQs, certification requirements, tooling constraints and shipping calendar. Within 7-10 working days we return a shortlist plan: two to three factory candidates per SKU with quoted FOB Mumbai / Mundra / Nhava Sheva / Chennai, sample lead-time, capacity availability, audit history and a recommended risk-split across the shortlist. We do not lock in a factory until you have signed off on golden samples — the industry standard we hold to.
Buyer-side representation — why it matters
The India sourcing landscape is crowded with two categories of intermediary: (1) sourcing platforms and directory services (Alibaba, IndiaMART, GlobalSources) that monetise buyer traffic by charging factories for visibility; and (2) sourcing brokers who take a hidden commission from the factory embedded inside the FOB price. Neither model represents the buyer's interests.
An independent sourcing agent — the model Asia Sourcing operates on — is contractually retained by the buyer, paid transparently by the buyer, and legally accountable to the buyer. Our supplier agreements include a mandatory non-kickback clause: any factory paying a hidden commission to any Asia Sourcing employee is immediately removed from the network. This structural discipline is why our shortlist recommendations are based purely on factory capability, not on who pays highest.
- Vetted factory shortlist within 7-10 working days of a new brief.
- Sample development from single-piece prototype to 5-piece golden sample.
- Container-loaded FOB pricing with all-in transparency (freight, duties, insurance separately quoted).
- AQL 2.5 pre-shipment inspection on every container (ISO 2859-1 sampling).
- Container loading supervision with photographed seal and load pattern.
- Full export documentation: COO, packing list, LC / TT / DP invoicing, CHA-handled customs.
Industries and buyer profiles we serve
Asia Sourcing's book of business splits roughly across five buyer profiles: mass-market and premium retail chains (Target, Home Depot, John Lewis, Anthropologie); specialty and DTC brands (West Elm, Restoration Hardware, Wayfair); hospitality contract programmes (Marriott, Hilton, Jumeirah, Rotana); interior-design studios and architects sourcing bespoke commissions; and licensed importers running private-label programmes for pan-regional retail. Each buyer profile has a distinct operational rhythm — retail runs on peak-season Q3/Q4 shipment deadlines, hospitality on FF&E project milestones, DTC brands on 6-week reorder cycles.
Twenty-plus years of experience — what it means operationally
The founder of Asia Sourcing, Dr Sumit Chhabra, has personally walked more than 1,000 Indian factory floors across brass, lighting, furniture, textile, glass, ceramic, leather and marble inlay industries since 2002. That accumulated pattern-recognition — knowing which factory can actually deliver the LFGB migration certificate versus which one will forge one, knowing which lacquer supplier does adequate salt-spray versus which one skips it — is the operational moat an India sourcing agent brings to a buyer.
For US, UK, European and Middle East buyers new to India, this compressed learning curve typically saves 6-12 months of trial-and-error that direct sourcing would otherwise incur, and typically saves 3-8% of landed cost through defect-rate reduction alone.
Frequently asked
IndiaSourcingAgent—commonquestions.
What is the difference between an India sourcing agent and a sourcing company?
An India sourcing agent is retained by an individual buyer and is contractually accountable to that buyer only. A sourcing company (or trading company) typically buys product on its own account, applies a margin, and resells to buyers — the buyer never sees the factory FOB. Agents are transparent-fee; sourcing companies are margin-embedded. Asia Sourcing operates as an independent buyer-side agent.
How does the fee model work?
Two models: (1) retainer — a fixed monthly fee for buyers running structured programmes, typically $3,500-8,000/month depending on volume; (2) transaction — a transparent percentage of FOB (4-7% typical) shown on every PR/PO. Buyer chooses. We never take money from factories.
Which India manufacturing clusters do you cover?
All 15 major export clusters: Moradabad (brass · lighting), Firozabad (glass), Jaipur (blue pottery · stone inlay), Jodhpur (solid-wood furniture), Saharanpur (wood carving), Panipat (recycled-yarn textile), Bhadohi (hand-knotted carpets), Varanasi (Banarasi silk), Agra (marble inlay · leather), Kashmir (pashmina · paper mache), Delhi / Noida / Gurugram (mixed-material · consolidation), Channapatna (lacquer wood), Karur (home textile).
How do you protect buyers from kickback risk?
Every supplier in our network signs a mandatory non-kickback clause as a condition of onboarding. Violation results in immediate removal from the network. Additionally, our fee is invoiced directly to the buyer — we do not accept payment from factories in any form (cash, credit, discount, hospitality).
What compliance documentation do you provide to US, UK and EU buyers?
Category-specific compliance packages: CE / UKCA / FDA / LFGB / Prop-65 / CPSIA / REACH / RoHS — whichever applies to the destination market. Documentation includes factory-level audits (BSCI · Sedex · SA8000 · WRAP · SMETA), material safety declarations, lab test reports (SGS · Intertek · TÜV · Bureau Veritas), COO, chain-of-custody (FSC · GOTS · GRS · GoodWeave · LWG) and full commercial documentation.
What is the typical timeline from brief to first container?
For standard SKUs: 90-120 days brief to FOB. Breakdown: 10 days shortlist, 20-30 days sample development, 15 days golden-sample sign-off, 45-60 days production, 5-7 days pre-shipment inspection + loading. Bespoke or new-tooling programmes add 30-45 days for pattern engineering.
Do you handle payment terms and currency risk?
Standard commercial terms: 30% advance TT + 70% against shipping documents (DP or LC). LC through international buyers' domestic banks is common on $500K+ annual programmes. Currency invoicing is USD by default; EUR / GBP / AUD available on request with small FX premium.
Can we visit factories with your team?
Yes — buyer factory visits are standard. Typical 5-day India visit covers Delhi office + 2-4 factories per day in the relevant clusters. We arrange all logistics (airport pickup, hotel, driver, factory tours, translator). Most international buyers do a first-visit within 90 days of the initial engagement.
What differentiates Asia Sourcing from other India sourcing agents?
Three structural differences: (1) independent buyer-side model with contractual non-kickback discipline; (2) Moradabad HQ inside the brass and lighting cluster — most competitors are Delhi-only; (3) 23-year founder-led continuity with an unusually low team turnover, meaning your account isn't restaffed every 18 months.
How do I start an engagement?
Send a written brief (product category, target retail price, MOQ, certifications, target ship-date) via /contact or hello@asiasourcing.co.in. We respond within one working day, and typically deliver a first shortlist plan within 7-10 working days at no charge — the engagement fee starts only once you approve the shortlist and move to samples.
