What a buying agent in India actually does
A buying agent is your in-country team — a single accountable contact who represents your interests on the factory floor, in the negotiation room, and at the container loading bay. Unlike a sourcing platform or a directory listing, a buying agent has skin in the game: their reputation is staked on every shipment you receive.
At Asia Sourcing, a typical engagement starts with a written brief — drawings, target retails, MOQs, certifications, lead-time constraints. Within 7-10 working days we return a shortlisted factory plan: 2-3 manufacturers per SKU with quoted FOB Mumbai or Mundra, sample lead time, capacity calendar, audit history, and a recommended split for risk. We do not pick one factory until you have approved samples in hand.
What separates a good agent from a brokerage is the willingness to walk a buyer away from the wrong factory. We have turned down work where the buyer's MOQ + lead-time + price equation simply does not exist in India — and pointed them to Vietnam or Indonesia where it does. That honesty is what compounds over 23 years into a 70%+ repeat-business rate.
Why hire a buying agent vs sourcing direct
Direct sourcing in India looks cheap on the surface — until you account for the costs that don't show up on an invoice. Wrong factory choice (10-30% of buyers' first containers from new markets), unmonitored production drift (4-8% reject rates that surface only at the buyer's warehouse), shipping consolidation errors (3-5 days demurrage), and the absolute cost of a buyer's senior people on flights, visas and hotels to manage from afar.
A buying agent collapses all of that into a single accountable line item — typically 4-7% of FOB for retail-volume programs. Buyers who run the math after 12 months almost universally find the all-in landed cost is lower with an agent than without, because the avoided reject rate alone usually pays the fee 2-3 times over.
- Pre-vetted factories — saves the 6-12 weeks buyers spend qualifying suppliers themselves.
- On-floor presence — issues are caught when they cost $0.10 to fix, not $10 to rework at the warehouse.
- Compliance dossier — BSCI/Sedex audit, GST, IEC, factory licences all on file before the first PO.
- Container loading supervision — every container photographed before sealing, dossier emailed within 24 hours.
- Currency + payment risk — agent acts as the contractual counterparty; you pay one entity, not 12.
- Single English-speaking point of contact across regions — no time-zone games or WhatsApp chains.
Our buying agent model — transparent fees, no factory kickbacks
Most sourcing intermediaries in India work on a hidden-commission model: the factory inflates the FOB by 3-8% and pays the agent under the table. The buyer thinks they're getting a 'free' agent. They're not. They're paying the same fee with no visibility.
Asia Sourcing rejects that model. We invoice the buyer directly — either as a flat retainer (for ongoing programs) or as a transparent % of FOB shown on every PR/PO line item. The factory never pays us anything. This is enforced contractually: every supplier in our network signs a non-kickback clause as a condition of working with us.
The result: when we recommend a factory, you can trust the recommendation is based on capability and reliability, not on who pays the highest commission. When we negotiate a price, that price is what the factory actually quoted — we don't have a vested interest in inflating it.
The cluster network — where we operate
Asia Sourcing's network spans India's eight major B2B manufacturing clusters. Our headquarters in Moradabad sits at the centre of the brass and lighting industry, but we have direct factory relationships across the country:
- Moradabad (UP) — brass, lighting, metalware. 400+ years of trade.
- Firozabad (UP) — hand-blown and decorative glass.
- Jaipur (Rajasthan) — blue pottery, polki/kundan jewellery, stone inlay.
- Jodhpur (Rajasthan) — solid-wood and industrial-iron furniture.
- Saharanpur (UP) — hand-carved wood furniture and screens.
- Panipat (Haryana) — recycled-yarn textiles, throws, rugs (GRS-certified).
- Noida + Delhi NCR — mixed-material décor, leather goods, export consolidation.
- Gurugram, Aligarh, Karur — emerging hubs for apparel, hardware and home textiles.

Frequently asked
BuyingAgentIndia—commonquestions.
What's the difference between a buying agent and a sourcing company in India?
A sourcing company is typically the seller — they buy from factories and resell to you with their markup. A buying agent represents you to the factories: you contract directly with the manufacturer, the agent earns a transparent fee. Asia Sourcing operates strictly as a buying agent.
How much does a buying agent in India charge?
Retainers run $2,000-6,000/month depending on category breadth and volume. Project-based fees are 5-7% of FOB. We disclose the structure on the first call and show it on every invoice line. No hidden factory kickbacks.
What product categories does Asia Sourcing cover?
Six primary verticals: lighting (brass, glass, ceramic), furniture (solid wood, iron, upholstery), home décor (mixed media, ceramic, blue pottery), textile (block print, weave, soft furnishing), brass & metalware (cast, spun, electroplated), and fashion accessories (leather, jewellery, embroidered apparel).
Can a buying agent help with samples before I commit?
Yes — sample sourcing is the first deliverable. We ship 1-3 samples per SKU within 2-4 weeks, costed at factory price + courier + a flat sample-handling fee. Sample approval gates the bulk PO.
Do you handle quality inspection too?
Yes. Buying-agent services include AQL 2.5 random inspections (initial / during / final / container-loading) with photo dossiers. See our Quality Inspection India service page for the detailed protocol.
