What a buying agent in India actually does

A buying agent is your in-country team — a single accountable contact who represents your interests on the factory floor, in the negotiation room, and at the container loading bay. Unlike a sourcing platform or a directory listing, a buying agent has skin in the game: their reputation is staked on every shipment you receive.

At Asia Sourcing, a typical engagement starts with a written brief — drawings, target retails, MOQs, certifications, lead-time constraints. Within 7-10 working days we return a shortlisted factory plan: 2-3 manufacturers per SKU with quoted FOB Mumbai or Mundra, sample lead time, capacity calendar, audit history, and a recommended split for risk. We do not pick one factory until you have approved samples in hand.

What separates a good agent from a brokerage is the willingness to walk a buyer away from the wrong factory. We have turned down work where the buyer's MOQ + lead-time + price equation simply does not exist in India — and pointed them to Vietnam or Indonesia where it does. Direct sourcing in India looks cheap on the surface — until you account for the costs that don't show up on an invoice. Most sourcing intermediaries in India work on a hidden-commission model: the factory inflates the FOB by 3-8% and pays the agent under the table. The buyer thinks they're getting a 'free' agent. They're not. They're paying the same fee with no visibility.

Asia Sourcing rejects that model. We invoice the buyer directly — either as a flat retainer (for ongoing programs) or as a transparent % of FOB shown on every PR/PO line item. The factory never pays us anything. This is enforced contractually: every supplier in our network signs a non-kickback clause as a condition of working with us.

The result: when we recommend a factory, you can trust the recommendation is based on capability and reliability, not on who pays the highest commission. When we negotiate a price, that price is what the factory actually quoted — we don't have a vested interest in inflating it.
