Four-stage furniture inspection framework

Pre-production inspection. Raw material verification (kiln-dried timber moisture content 8-12%, fabric composition against spec, hardware conformity), pre-production sample sign-off, and first-piece confirmation before mass production kicks off. Catches material substitution before it becomes a container-level problem.

During-production inspection (DPI). Typically at 30-50% completion. Sub-assembly verification (joinery integrity, mortise-and-tenon and dowel construction, welding quality on metal frames, foam density and stitching pull-force on upholstery), interim dimensional checks against tech-pack, finishing quality checkpoint. Corrective actions can still be applied without slipping the shipment window.

Final inspection / pre-shipment inspection (PSI). AQL 2.5 sampling standard across major-minor-critical defect classification, 100% functional testing where applicable (drawer runners, hinge operation, adjustable-position mechanisms), full dimensional verification against tech-pack, packaging integrity check with drop-test on selected cartons, labelling verification (country-of-origin, GS / UKCA / CE / NF marks per destination), material-composition declaration cross-check.

Container loading supervision. Container photography, load-plan verification, dunnage inspection, container-condition inspection (seaworthiness, no water damage or contamination risk), seal number recording, and export-documentation package handoff to the freight forwarder.

What we check on Indian-manufactured furniture

Wood quality — species identification against spec, moisture content, defect count per m² (splits, knots, checks, worm-hole), grain match on visible-surface panels. Joinery — mortise-and-tenon integrity, dowel-count and dowel-depth per joint, biscuit joinery quality, drawer-box construction. Structural quality — rack-test on chairs and stools (100kg horizontal load), leg-attachment integrity, cross-brace and stretcher construction. Welding — weld penetration, weld continuity, spatter grinding, powder-coat coverage on welded joints.

Upholstery — foam density (25-45 kg/m³ depending on tier), foam ILD (Indentation Load Deflection), fabric composition and abrasion-resistance (Martindale rub count), stitching pull-force and stitches-per-inch, seam-slippage test, welt-cord alignment. Surface finishing — colour-match against Pantone / RAL, finish-coat coverage, mar-resistance (pencil hardness test), UV-fade pre-test where applicable. Hardware — hinge cycle-testing (10,000+ cycle rating for premium tier), drawer-runner cycle-testing, screw pull-out force, cam-lock integrity.

Functionality — every drawer opens and closes smoothly, every door hangs true, every hinge operates without binding, every adjustable-mechanism cycles through full range. Packaging — carton compression strength, corner-protector fit, foam-block placement, bubble-wrap layer count, master-carton labelling completeness. Labelling — country-of-origin, GS / UKCA / CE / NF / CPSIA marks per destination, retailer barcode placement, care-and-assembly instruction inclusion.

AQL 2.5 sampling — how it works on furniture

AQL 2.5 (Acceptable Quality Limit 2.5%) is the international sampling standard for consumer-goods pre-shipment inspection. On a 400-unit furniture container, an AQL 2.5 general-inspection-level-II sample is 50 units — sampled randomly across the container's SKU mix. Defects are classified major (functional or safety-affecting), minor (aesthetic-only but visible), or critical (safety-affecting or non-compliant with regulatory requirement).

Pass / fail thresholds vary by SKU class. Our reports include a full defect breakdown with photographic evidence per defect, and a documented corrective-action plan for any borderline lot before shipment authorization. Buyers receive the inspection report inside 24 hours of on-site completion.
