The home-décor cluster map
Home décor is not a single category — it's an ecosystem of 40+ product families, each dominated by one or two Indian clusters. Getting the cluster right on each SKU is what separates a well-run home-décor programme from one that scatters MOQ-uneconomic small orders across too many origins.
GI-tagged crafts — provenance and premium positioning
India has 12 Geographical Indication (GI) protected craft clusters within our sourcing network — a level of documented craft heritage that no other export geography can match. GI-tagged crafts include Moradabad brass, Agra marble, Jaipur blue pottery, Bhadohi hand-knotted carpets, Kashmir Kani and Sozni pashmina, Kashmir paper mache, Kashmir walnut carving, Channapatna lacquerware, Varanasi Banarasi silk, Saharanpur wood carving, Firozabad glass and specific Rajasthan handicrafts.
For premium retail (John Lewis, Anthropologie, Restoration Hardware, Liberty London) and specialty-design retail (Merci, ferm LIVING, HAY, Beaubourg district), GI-tagged craft provenance is the storytelling depth that supports retail-shelf price premium. Our sourcing engagements include full GI-tag documentation, artisan attribution and chain-of-custody paperwork on every GI-tagged shipment.
Private label vs branded product
Home décor sourcing splits into two commercial models. Private label programmes see the buyer own the brand, the design and the retail positioning — the factory is a manufacturing partner. This is the dominant model for retail chains and specialty retailers. Branded programmes see the buyer stock and resell a pre-branded product — less common in home décor except for hospitality and licensed programmes.
Asia Sourcing runs both. Private label is our default model (95%+ of our book of business) — the buyer sends design and specification, our team sources / develops / produces / ships. Branded product is available on select craft categories where an artisan cooperative or GI-cluster association has established a marketable brand.
Seasonal programmes — Q1-Q2 development for Q3-Q4 shipment
Home décor is a heavily seasonal category. Christmas / Diwali / Ramadan / Eid / Chinese New Year drive retail-shelf launches in Q3-Q4 for Northern-Hemisphere Western retailers and Q2-Q3 for GCC and Southern-Hemisphere retailers. This creates a rhythm: design development January-April, sample development April-July, production July-October, shipment October-December for Northern-Hemisphere Christmas retail.
Our home-décor sourcing calendar is pre-aligned to this cycle. Buyers commissioning Christmas / Diwali programmes in January-April receive samples April-July and can commit production July-August for Q3 container-loading. Late commissioning (May onwards) compresses timelines and adds peak-season shipping surcharges.
Frequently asked
HomeDecorSourcingIndia—commonquestions.
How do you handle multi-cluster consolidation for home décor programmes?
Delhi NCR consolidation hub receives production from all 15 clusters, quality-inspects, and consolidates into single 40-ft containers. Enables 4-8 SKU multi-cluster containers at cluster-appropriate MOQ per SKU. Documentation: one bill of lading, one export document set, one arrival event.
What is the MOQ for home décor sourcing?
Category and cluster dependent. Bespoke commissioned pieces (marble inlay, hand-carved wood, luxury textile): single-piece MOQ available. Small-batch craft (blue pottery, brass décor): 200-500 units. Mid-tier retail (multi-material décor, gifting): 500-1,000. Mass-market retail (kitchen textile, standard glass): 1,000-5,000.
Do you handle GI-tagged craft chain-of-custody?
Yes — GI-tag documentation and artisan attribution is included on every GI-tagged shipment. For Moradabad brass, Agra marble, Kashmir pashmina, Channapatna lacquerware, Varanasi silk, Bhadohi carpets and other GI-protected crafts. Documentation supports retail-shelf provenance storytelling.
How do you handle seasonal programmes?
Christmas / Diwali / Ramadan / Eid programmes: development January-April, samples April-July, production July-October, shipment October-December for Northern-Hemisphere Q4 retail. Timeline compression possible but reduces sample-iteration space and increases peak-season shipping premium.
Can we run mixed-material SKUs (metal + wood + glass in one product)?
Yes — Noida and Delhi NCR contract-manufacturing factories run mixed-material assembly. Individual component sourcing may span multiple clusters (brass from Moradabad, wood from Saharanpur, glass from Firozabad) with final assembly at Delhi NCR. Adds 15-20 days lead time but enables premium multi-material design language.
How do you handle sample development for home décor?
Sample development 20-30 days for standard SKUs, 45-60 days for hand-craft categories (marble inlay, blue pottery, hand-knotted carpet). Iteration cycles typical: 3-5 rounds before golden sample sign-off. Sample cost typically waived on first PO.
What sustainability certifications are available in home décor?
GOTS (organic cotton), GRS (recycled yarn), FSC (wood chain-of-custody), GoodWeave (child-labour-free carpet), LWG (leather working group), CraftMark (Indian handicraft), Fairtrade (artisan cooperatives). Certification support included as standard on applicable categories.
Which premium retailers have you delivered home décor for?
John Lewis, Anthropologie, West Elm, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Terrain, Liberty London, Maisons du Monde, Merci, ferm LIVING, HAY, Broste Copenhagen, ILVA and dozens of specialty retailers. Named references available under NDA.
