Garden category families
Garden products split into six functional families. Each has distinct manufacturing origin, weather-treatment requirements and retail-shelf positioning.
Weather treatment — the technical layer
Garden products fail in the field for one of three reasons: UV degradation (finishes fade, plastics become brittle), moisture ingress (metals corrode, wood warps, ceramics crack in freeze-thaw), or biological attack (mould, mildew, wood rot). Weather-treatment addresses all three at the manufacturing stage:
- UV-stable finishes — powder-coating with UV-stable pigments (typically Akzo Nobel or Jotun UV-stable ranges), or hand-patinated finishes with UV-inhibitor sealer top-coat.
- Salt-spray corrosion resistance — 96-hour minimum (ASTM B117) for standard outdoor, 240-hour+ for coastal or marine-adjacent placement.
- Freeze-thaw stability — for ceramic and terracotta destined for Northern-hemisphere winters. Verified via ASTM C666 freeze-thaw cycling test.
- Wood treatment — for outdoor wood (teak, sheesham outdoor-grade, rubber-wood outdoor-grade), typical treatments: kiln-drying to 8-12% MC, penetrating oil (tung, teak oil), UV-stable outdoor lacquer.
- Marine-grade hardware — 316-grade stainless-steel or brass fittings on any outdoor product with mechanical fasteners.
- Biological treatment — wood preservatives (approved copper naphthenate or thermal modification), mildew-resistant paint additives.
Regulatory and biosecurity considerations
Garden products carry specific regulatory considerations beyond standard home décor. For Australian and New Zealand buyers, MPI (NZ Ministry for Primary Industries) and DAWE (Australian Department of Agriculture) biosecurity requirements are non-negotiable — any wood, wicker, or plant-fibre component requires ISPM-15 heat-treatment plus (for some categories) fumigation certificates. Our supplier network runs this as standard.
For USA-bound garden products, USDA APHIS regulations apply to wood-based products. For EU-bound, ISPM-15 wood-packing requirements plus REACH SVHC declarations on any finished treatment coatings. For GCC-bound, GSO harmonised regulations plus (for KSA-specific) SASO / SABER certification on lighting-integrated products. Our compliance layer handles all of these upstream at the factory.
Seasonal peak — the garden calendar
Garden products are heavily seasonal for Northern Hemisphere markets. Retail launch March-April aligns with spring planting season; back-end launch September-October for autumn / Christmas outdoor décor. This creates a manufacturing calendar: design September-November, samples November-January, production January-March, shipment February-April for spring retail launch.
Late commissioning is common in this category — buyers often push design decisions into January-February and then need April-March shipment. We accommodate with peak-capacity slots reserved for retainer clients, but the compressed timeline typically requires premium expedited freight and reduces sample-iteration space.
Frequently asked
GardenProductSourcingIndia—commonquestions.
What is the MOQ for garden products from India?
Category-dependent. Small planters and lanterns: 500 units typical. Larger sculpture and statement pieces: 100-300. Outdoor furniture: 50-100. Bespoke commissioned pieces: single-piece MOQ for interior-design and hospitality garden programmes.
How do you handle UV-stable finishes?
Powder-coating with UV-stable pigments (Akzo Nobel, Jotun) is our default for outdoor metal. Hand-patinated finishes on brass and copper use UV-inhibitor sealer top-coat. QEV testing (accelerated weathering per ASTM G154) can be commissioned for high-value programmes to verify colour-fastness before mass production.
What salt-spray corrosion standard do you use?
96-hour ASTM B117 salt-spray as the standard on outdoor programmes. 240-hour or 500-hour for coastal / marine-adjacent placement (Florida, Mediterranean, GCC coastal, Australian coastal). Testing at SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas Indian labs, certificate issued per production batch.
Do you handle MPI / DAWE biosecurity for Australia and New Zealand?
Yes — MPI (NZ) and DAWE (Australia) biosecurity is a standard part of our AU/NZ-bound programmes. ISPM-15 heat-treatment on all wood packing as default. Fumigation certificates on wooden and wicker product itself where applicable. Certificate documentation included in the export documentation package.
Can you handle freeze-thaw stability for European markets?
Yes — for ceramic, terracotta and stone products destined for Northern European winters, freeze-thaw stability is verified by ASTM C666 cycling test (typically 25 or 50 freeze-thaw cycles). Products failing the test are diverted to warmer-market SKUs or reformulated with improved clay body.
What is the lead time for garden products?
45-75 days FOB for standard SKUs. Complex assembled outdoor furniture: 90 days. Bespoke commissioned garden sculpture: 90-120 days. Add 5-10 days for peak-season (August-November).
Do you integrate solar-powered LED into garden lighting?
Yes — solar-integrated path lights, garden lanterns and pond lights are a growing category. Solar cell + LED + rechargeable battery integration runs at our Delhi NCR contract-manufacturing partners. Additional 10-15 days lead time for solar integration. CE / UL / SASO certification as applicable.
Which garden retailers have you delivered for?
Home Depot, Lowe's, B&Q, Homebase, Bunnings (Australia), plus specialty garden retailers (Terrain, Anthropologie garden, Cox & Cox, Nordic House). Named references available under NDA.
