How a lighting buying agent works

Buyer-side commercial model
Two commercial structures. Percentage commission — 5-9% of FOB (typically higher than furniture because of multi-cluster coordination complexity), paid by the buyer, transparently invoiced. Suitable for buyers with recurring quarterly programmes. Fixed retainer — a monthly retainer plus a small per-inspection fee, suitable for large multi-category or hospitality FF&E programmes.
Our fee is invoiced by us to the buyer and disclosed in the buyer's landed-cost sheet. No shadow commission from the factory. Buyer-visibility on our margin is provided on request. Non-disclosure agreements protect the factory shortlists we prepare — no direct-to-factory bypass during the engagement window is standard buying-agent protocol.
Compliance coordination is agent-heavy
Lighting sourcing has a compliance overhead that furniture and home décor do not. Every SKU needs destination-specific electrical safety certification — cUL for US, UKCA + BS 1363 plug for UK, CE + GS + Schuko for Germany, NF + French Type-E for France, RCM + AS/NZS for Australia. The buying agent's role is to coordinate the testing lab (TÜV Rheinland, SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek), the factory's test-sample submission, retest cycles if a sample fails, and the certificate handoff to the buyer at PO stage.
Retest cycles are common on new SKUs — typically 10-15% of first-submission SKUs need a design revision (wiring gauge, insulation, grounding, lamp-holder rating, thermal design) to pass. Our agents manage this from the factory side, batching retests to minimise buyer-side delay, and reporting programme status to the buyer weekly.
