What prototype development includes

Prototype development is a three-stage engineering workflow: (1) design translation — converting the buyer's design intent into producible drawings, dimensions and material specifications; (2) first-off sampling — building a single prototype in the intended material and finish; (3) iteration to golden sample — refining the prototype through 3-5 rounds of feedback until it meets the buyer's approval standard.

Each stage produces documented deliverables: CAD files (SolidWorks or Rhino), 3D-print visuals for design-heavy pieces, first-off physical sample with defect notes, iteration logs, golden-sample sign-off certificate. This paper trail is critical because it becomes the reference standard for every PO placed against that factory, ensuring production consistency 3 years and 30 containers later.

Design translation — the critical first step

Roughly 60% of prototype-development failures happen in design translation — the buyer sends a mood board or a rough sketch, the factory 'interprets' it into their own manufacturing shorthand, and the resulting prototype bears little resemblance to what the buyer imagined. Our in-house design team (SolidWorks / Rhino / Illustrator fluent) takes the buyer's input — sketch, mood board, CAD, reference photograph — and produces a formal technical drawing with dimensions, materials, finishes, hardware call-outs and colour Pantone references. This drawing is signed off by the buyer before any sample is cut. It becomes the contractual specification for the factory.

Marble and stone inlay prototypes

Hand-cut Makrana marble with semi-precious inlay (pietra dura). Executed at our Agra network. High-detail prototypes take 45-60 days given the hand-craft intensity; simpler geometric inlays 20-30 days.

Iteration cycle — 3-5 rounds is normal

Most buyers expect a first-off prototype to be close to production-ready. Reality: the first-off establishes the baseline, and typical iteration cycle is 3-5 rounds before golden sample. Round 1 usually surfaces material or finish adjustments (colour off, weight off, hardware position off). Round 2-3 refines proportions and detailing. Round 4-5 locks packaging, labelling and shipping specifications.

Buyers who plan for 3-5 iteration rounds upfront save the sourcing agent — and the factory — the friction of the 'why does this look different from what I asked for' conversation. Iteration is not a bug; it's the mechanism that guarantees the container of 5,000 pieces looks like the sketch, three years later, third factory shift, junior worker at the finishing line.

How much does prototype development cost?

Sample cost varies by category and complexity — brass pendants $80-250 per sample, solid-wood chairs $200-600 per sample, marble inlay pieces $150-500 per sample. Sample cost is typically waived on first PO (amortised into unit price). Tooling cost (moulds, dies, patterns) is separate and one-time.

How long does prototype development take?

First-off prototype 10-14 days typical; golden sample (after 3-5 iterations) 20-30 days typical. New-tooling programmes add 15-20 days for pattern engineering before first-off. Marble and hand-craft categories run longer given the manual-craft cycle.

Can we send CAD files or do we need to work from sketches?

Both. CAD-in workflows go faster (skip the design-translation step). Sketch-in and mood-board workflows go through our design team's translation step first (adds 3-5 days). We work in SolidWorks, Rhino, Illustrator and AutoCAD.

How is design IP protected during prototype development?

Every factory in our network signs a mandatory mutual NDA as a condition of onboarding. Additionally, design-sensitive prototypes are executed under a programme-specific NDA that binds the factory to non-copying, non-resale and post-sample destruction obligations. Can we prototype in one factory and produce in another?

Yes, but with caveats. The golden sample and the technical drawing are portable across factories in the same cluster with the same equipment. Moving production to a different cluster or a different equipment class typically requires re-prototyping (roughly 30-50% of the design work carries over).

Do you handle tooling investments separately?

Yes. Tooling (moulds, dies, patterns, engraving plates, cutting templates) is a one-time capital cost separate from sample cost. Typical tooling ranges $500 (simple metal die) to $8,000 (complex multi-part glass mould). Tooling ownership: buyer retains ownership; factory holds custody for the duration of the programme.

Can we skip the golden sample and go direct to production?

Not recommended. First-off samples reveal issues that only show up in physical form (weight, colour, feel, sound, finish). Skipping golden sample historically results in first-PO defect rates 2-4× normal. We insist on golden-sample approval as a standard condition of engagement.

What is in the golden-sample sign-off document?

Formal buyer-approval certificate signed and dated, physical sample photograph with dimensions annotated, material specification, finish specification, packaging specification, and the technical drawing.
