SourcingbrasshandicraftsfromIndia

Moradabad — the Brass City of India — has continuously produced brass handicrafts for over 400 years, since Emperor Rustam Khan established the city's foundries in the 17th century. Today the cluster represents 60% of India's brass exports and roughly 20% of global brass-handicraft trade. Our sourcing programme covers cast brass statuary, urlis (temple ceremonial vessels), planters, lamps, temple ware, decorative sculpture and architectural fittings — every piece sand-cast, hand-spun or centrifugally-cast in registered Moradabad foundries.

Casting techniques — sand-cast, centrifugal, gravity die

Brass handicraft production uses three primary casting techniques with distinct end-product characteristics. Sand-casting is the classic artisan method — a mould is formed in green sand around a wooden pattern, molten brass poured in and allowed to solidify, then the sand is broken away. Ideal for statuary, ornate decorative pieces and one-off commissioned work. The natural surface irregularity that results (called 'skin') is deliberately retained on premium artisan pieces.

Centrifugal casting spins molten brass into a rotating cylindrical mould, forcing it against the mould walls under centrifugal force. Produces the most consistent wall thickness and structural density — used for bells, vessels and cylindrical decorative pieces. Gravity die-casting uses reusable metal moulds for high-volume identical pieces (planters, standard-shape urlis, mass-market decorative pieces). Each technique has a place; our foundry network runs all three.

Product range — statuary, urlis, lamps, planters, temple ware

The commercial export range spans five primary product families. Statuary — figurative sculpture of deities (Ganesha, Buddha, Lakshmi, Nataraja), animals (elephants, cows, horses), abstract art pieces — represents our largest volume, particularly to spiritual-retail and gifting channels. Urlis (traditional shallow ceremonial bowls used for floating flowers and candles) are extremely popular in the interior-design channel across the range from 300mm cocktail-side to 900mm banquet size.

Planters (hand-hammered, spun, engraved, patina-finished) dominate the outdoor-décor and garden-supply channel — sizes from 200mm herb-planter to 1200mm architectural feature-pieces. Lamps and temple-ware (diyas, hanging lamps, incense holders, prayer bowls) run into both spiritual-retail and decorative-lighting channels. Architectural fittings — door handles, hinges, kitchen-drawer hardware, decorative wall hooks — supply the specialist interior-design and heritage-hotel markets.

Finishes — mirror, antique, oxidised, patina, gold-plated

Brass finishing is where technical craft meets aesthetic decision-making. Mirror-polished brass — the traditional 'gold' look — is achieved through progressive-grit hand-buffing followed by cotton-mop mirror-polish and lacquer sealing. Antique brass uses controlled surface oxidation (typically ammonium sulphide or ferric-nitrate baths) to darken the surface with warm brown tones; the highlights are then hand-buffed back to reveal contrast. Popular in interior-design channels wanting classical warmth.

Oxidised black, verdigris green (deliberately induced patina), gold-plated (24-carat gold electroplate on the highest-value pieces), and specialist chemical-blackened finishes are all available. Every finish is corrosion-tested for a minimum 96-hour salt-spray tolerance — critical for outdoor planters and coastal-climate installations. Lacquer coating options range from clear cellulose (traditional) to high-performance polyurethane (modern durability standard).

Quality control, alloy specification and export compliance

Brass alloy composition is the critical hidden quality lever. Our supplier tier specifies IS 291 (Indian Standard) or C22000 (US Standard) commercial-brass alloy — 90% copper, 10% zinc, virtually zero lead. This matters because European and Californian markets restrict lead content in brass to sub-100ppm levels for consumer-contact pieces (particularly children's-facing products and food-contact serveware).

Every casting batch is XRF-tested (X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry) for alloy composition confirmation. Structural integrity is tested through visual weld/casting inspection, drop-test (1m onto hardwood for pieces under 3kg), and dimension-accuracy verification. Our Delhi QC lab runs additional 96-hour salt-spray corrosion resistance testing on all finish varieties. Certificates cover REACH, Prop-65, EN 71-3 and RoHS compliance depending on destination.

Frequently asked

Brass Handicrafts — buyer questions

What is the MOQ for private-label brass handicrafts from Moradabad?

MOQ 300 pieces per SKU for stock designs. Custom-cast statuary and commissioned pieces accepted at lower quantities (50-100 pieces). Bespoke sand-cast one-off art pieces are also part of our programme scope for interior-design and hospitality clients.

Is Indian brass lead-free and safe for children's product use?

Yes. Our supplier tier uses IS 291 / C22000 alloy — 90% copper, 10% zinc, sub-100ppm lead. Every batch is XRF-tested for alloy confirmation. Meets EU REACH, California Prop-65, EN 71-3 (children's toy safety) and RoHS. Certificates provided with every shipment.

What is the difference between mirror-polished and antique-brass finishes?

Mirror-polished: progressive hand-buffing to cotton-mop finish, clear lacquer sealed — the classic 'gold' brass look. Antique brass: controlled surface oxidation (ammonium sulphide bath) producing warm brown tones, highlights hand-buffed back to reveal contrast. Different aesthetic choices; both are equally durable.

Are Moradabad brass planters safe for outdoor use in coastal climates?

Yes, with the correct finish specification. Standard 96-hour salt-spray corrosion resistance is our baseline. For heavy coastal exposure we specify polyurethane clear-coat (upgraded from cellulose) and stainless-steel lining for water-holding planters. 5-year outdoor durability warranty available.

How long does hand-cast brass statuary take to produce?

Standard-size commercial statuary (200-400mm): 30-40 days including sand-mould creation, casting, cleaning, hand-finishing and polish. Large commissioned pieces (600mm+): 60-90 days. Bespoke one-off artist commissions: 90-120 days depending on complexity and artisan availability.

Do you offer patina, verdigris and specialist finish options?

Yes. Standard mirror polish, antique brass, oxidised black, verdigris green (induced natural patina), 24-carat gold electroplate, chemical-blackened and rustic hand-hammered finishes all available. Each finish carries independent corrosion-resistance certification.
